"A good odd time player is just a drummer who is comfortable with it. If you stop and think about it, almost all of us are good 4/4 players. I mean none of us get uneasy when we are told that a tune we will be playing is in 4/4. But let someone say it is in 7/8 or 9/8 etc. and some of us get border line queasy for God's sake!!! Why? We simply don't do it enough. The music of our culture is predominately written in 4/4 time. It is what we grew up listening to. Aside from a few Sting tunes, try and name some odd time tunes you hear on American Pop Radio. Good Luck!! The bottom line is , if you want to be a good odd time player , play in odd time A LOT!!! It's that simple. Just think. If you lived in India and they told you the next tala you would be playing was in 4/4 time, you'd be getting that same queasy feeling!! "
