The first thing that should come to mind when Hip Hop is mentioned should be SWING.  That is what Hip Hop is essentially. The difference between the swung notes in Swing or Jazz and Hip Hop is that the notes in jazz are usually swung at the eighth note level while in Hip Hop they usually swing at the sixteenth note level. The first Hip Hop groove below will demonstrate this. Notice how the Hi Hat part is straight eighth notes if played by itself. The eighth notes are NOT swung. The swing feel occurs at the sixteenth note level in this groove. Please be aware that Hip Hop is a STYLE containing an infinite number of possible grooves and NOT the name of ONE particular groove. This is the first Hip Hop groove of many more grooves and fills to come here at The Groovatorium !!!
