It is my guess
that this fill was improvised at the end of the tune in which case it makes it very hard
to transcribe. In order to transcribe you first need to establish the time against which
the particular groove or fill was played. Since Bonham probably just "went for
it" at the end of the tune, it is hard to determine where his time is. So what I did
was continued the time that was stated in the tune just before the fill occurs and carried
it all the way through the fill to the end. When Robert Plant says "time" at the
end of his phrase, I used this as beat one of the pick up measure. The first two notes of
the fill occur in beat 4 of that measure. At first I had them right on beat 4 but then I
listened more and more and it sounded more like they started on the 2nd sixteenth note of
beat 4. Now I listen to it again and I want to but them back on the beat again. Like I
said....to try and grab the exact placement of a fill that is just started at random is a
tricky thing. I listen to this over and over again and I hear the possibility of the
placement of some of the notes against the time stated in the song possibly needing
to be adjusted but then after reviewing them again I think they are ok. What is important
however is to capture the ideas and the nuances of the drummer and I feel this is done
quite accurately. The licks I truly feel are transcribed correctly as far as notation and
instrumentation. They are pure Bonham in every aspect. In short...his ideas are captured.
The placement of these ideas against a time source may not be accurate but I believe
Bonzo was going for a feel thing at this point in the song and not so worried about
playing his lick perfectly in time. Not to say that he couldnt or his time wasnt so great
but at this point in the song a focus on time really wasnt needed. Its just a "roll
out" at the end of a tune and the rest of the band probably just hit with Bonham on
his cue to end the tune. Normally if I am not 100% sure on a transcription I won't
post it. This was a request however and to avoid letting a vistior down, I gave it a shot.
If anyone has any suggestions on this transcription please feel free to email me with
them. Thanks a lot!!!!
